Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

England opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in several interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

But, after Crawley made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "weak men" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There is no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
