SNAP Payments Expected to End for 41 Million Throughout Ongoing Government Closure
USDA officials stated on Saturday that nutrition assistance payments through a critical national support systems are not going out next month because of the continuing federal closure.
Impasse Persists For Nearly Four Weeks
The federal closure lasted nearly a month as officials revealed the news, which followed calls from over 200 Democratic representatives urging the department to access emergency reserves to cover the upcoming nutrition payments.
“The reality is, the well has run dry,” the USDA stated. “Now, no payments will be distributed” beginning in November.
National Consequences
Tens of millions of people rely on these food benefits, as reported by official statistics. Various areas, such as New Mexico, reliance on this assistance reaches one-fifth of the population.
A memo obtained by Reuters indicated that federal authorities would not access contingency funding for November food benefits.
Political Stalemate
Congressional leaders continue to disagree over how to support and resume the federal government.
Comments by the head of a prominent policy organization suggested that the White House had chances to take earlier action to prevent benefits from running out.
“It could have, and should have made moves weeks ago to get ready to utilize available money,” the comments added. “Rather, they might decide against it to secure political leverage” while GOP lawmakers attempt to pressure Senate Democrats to vote for a spending bill that would reopen the federal government.
Emergency Measures
Executives in Louisiana and Virginia activated emergency protocols recently to free up resources for hunger relief preparing for food benefits expiring in November.
