Prison Shock: The FormerPresident Jair Bolsonaro Confronts Time Behind Bars

He battled the law and the legal system prevailed.

A couple of months following getting a quarter-century plus sentence for seeking to “annihilate” Brazil’s political system, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro finally appears destined for incarceration.

Imminent Imprisonment

The adjudicated plotter – who had been under house arrest in his estate while a set of legal procedures and challenges play out – is widely expected to be incarcerated in the next few days, amid growing rumors that he will be moved to a well-known high-security prison.

Past Remarks on Inmates

During Bolsonaro’s 40-year time in politics, the conservative former paratrooper showed minimal compassion for the country's prison population.

“For what reason must we give these lowlifes a easy time?” he once pondered. “They ought to simply be fucked, full-fucking-stop. That's my opinion.”

On another occasion, Bolsonaro stated: “Unless you desire to wind up there, the only thing required is to avoid sexual assault, abduction or theft.”

Incarceration Destination Discussion

Yet the possibility of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda prison high-security prison in Brasília has appalled allies, four of whom this week inspected the facility in an obvious bid to dissuade the judiciary from sending him there.

The senator, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was among that group, said he expected the 70-year-old leader to be jailed in the coming fortnight and feared his destination could be Papuda.

He asserted Bolsonaro’s acute digestive problems – the consequence of a almost deadly stabbing during the last election race – implied it would be hazardous to keep the ex-leader there. “His [health] situation is very grave. He will not be able to handle it if they take him to Papuda … It will be dreadful,” he commented, who also worried about overcrowded cells and the condition of jail cuisine.

During his tour Papuda, Lucas noted seeing cells accommodating 40 prisoners: “It's almost one square metre per inmate.

“We spoke to the prisoners and they grumble, naturally, of the terrible cuisine,” remarked the senator.

Backers Voice Concerns

He is not the only voice voicing opinions prior to the one-time head of state's predicted imprisonment.

Writing in a major publication, another ally, the ex- cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “harsh” finale to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” time in office and alleged Brazil was about to see “the largest wrong in its history”.

“It represents an wrong that gnaws the hearts of many people in Brazil,” Wajngarten wrote.

Mixed Public Reaction

That may be true given the considerable support Bolsonaro retains on the conservative side. However his expected jailing has also gladdened the spirits of millions other people who think he deserves to be jailed for plotting to prevent the incoming president from taking power – and even conspiring to have him assassinated.

Congressman Otoni, a representative for the incumbent leader's allied group, commented: “Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to be sent in a dark cell. Nobody wants Bolsonaro to be sent in segregation. No one desires Bolsonaro to go hungry or for him to have to lie on concrete. We wish him to receive respectful handling – but dignified handling behind bars. He cannot persist being his personal jailer for his entire life.”

The congressman noted how Bolsonaro allies, who have spent years praising the tough handling of convicts, had unexpectedly realized to their rights. “Just now has the conservative fringe – which has repeatedly asserted that human rights are not for lawbreakers – opted to inspect a prison to find out what conditions are truly like,” he stated.

“Bolsonaro is a criminal,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he earned “shameful, degrading conduct”.

Likely Prison Conditions

Regardless of talk that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which now houses about fourteen thousand detainees, his more likely destination seems to be a nearby prison for law enforcement and other “particular” prisoners known as Papudinha (Minor Papuda).

The accommodations are much more pleasant than those in the primary facility, although still a distant from the opulence Bolsonaro enjoyed while occupying the impressive leader's home, approximately 12 miles away.

According to information, the room Bolsonaro could likely occupy in Papudinha measures about 260 square feet – roughly the size of vehicle spaces – and features a 130 square foot bathroom with a shower and a 12 square meter veranda. “Bolsonaro would be permitted to have a television and also a small fridge in his room as long as they were supplied by his family,” information stated.

Ideological Responses

The lawmaker condemned the rumoured proposal to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “a type of payback” on the part of the judicial authority who presided over Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will decide his fate in the {
