Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn commented. “His family, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where he has been listed as in critical but steady condition.

“Still unsure,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.”

Authorities issued surveillance images Monday of a suspect in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and police mentioned it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.

The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday in the area between the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was admitted to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The assailant escaped.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been on his mind “a great deal” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse just had a newborn.

“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd hasn’t played this season, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.

Boyd came to New York as a free agent in spring and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a training camp practice on August 2 and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while working his way back.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn said. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He joined Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with New York in March.
