The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer behind a series of unforgettable images favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.

Price was best known for his defined forms and theatrical styles, most notably the soft-colored suits that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."

Price's death comes just weeks after he presented his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the famous black velvet "dress" made famous by the late Princess Diana.

A Lasting Legacy

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he started his work in men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger sported during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to merge menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting body-hugging looks established him as a "true original," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.

By the 1990s, he started creating ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including a number of outfits for her American tour following her marriage.

With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: A hallmark of his work.
  • Theatrical Flair: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

Design circles laments the passing to a authentic original whose influence on fashion and music remains deeply ingrained.
